His father was named Sungbum Kyab and his mothers name was Kelsang Men. In the Dragon Male Earth Year of the 13th cycle, which is to say, the western year of 1748, he passed on.

When he was 7, he learned his alphabet, reading and writing, and selected prayers for recitation by mimicking his father. In his 9th year, he went to the great monastery of Chone, called the Center for Flourishing Concentration, and took monastic vows from the throne holder, Gendun Drakpa.

When he was 30, he was designated as a Hlarampa Geshe, and it was planned that he would stand for his oral defense at the following year's Munlam Festival. But, in that year, a civil disturbance occurred. The Mongolian King of Tibet, Hlasang, murdered the realized Prime Minister, Sanggye Gyatso Rinpoche.

At that point of time, the Tibetan government commanded that extensive memorial services in honor of the deceased regent had to be held. Without regard to their sect, 20 or 30,000 monks assembled in the 8th month of that year in Hlasa, just like Munlam. The government ordered the monks to assemble but decreed that there should be no awarding of Geshe degrees. The people assembled as the central government commanded. In keeping with the instructions of his teacher, Tsultrim Rinchen, Chone Drakpa Shedrup did his final oral defense at Sera and he received high honors.

At the age of 31, Chone Drakpa Shedrup went to Tsang province and took the vows of a full monk, and entered Gyutu Tantric College. Without having to stay there very long, he went out to U and took some oral examinations at Ganden and Drepung monasteries. All of the collected monks of these two monasteries were amazed by him.

In his 32nd year, Chone Drakpa Shedrup went back to his own province and became the Lama of the sutra college of the great monastery of Chone. Then he gradually became the abbot of the tantric division of that monastery, and finally became the abbot of the entire monastery, the Chone Center for Flourishing Concentration. He then became the root lama of eminent people like Ngakwang Trinley Gyatso, and the 11th Governor of Chone, Jamyang Norbu.
